The 35-year-old has been critical of the Irish government on social media over the past few weeks

Conor McGregor has said he's 'ashamed to be Irish' while launching a stinging attack on Irish President Michael Higgins.

The UFC star has been vocal on social media over the past few weeks, slamming the Irish government for what he perceives to be a soft immigration policy.

McGregor has regularly taken aim at Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, too.

He called out Varadkar for comments made about a hostage who was held by Hamas, while also believing the country needs greater protection.

And McGregor has now launched a fresh attack on social media, slamming Higgins and saying he's 'ashamed to be Irish'.

A separate account on X said: "BREAKING: Eight illegals have jumped out of a truck in Ashbourne, Ireland, and fled the scene.

"This is the reality of the Irish Government's 'rules-based immigration system.'"

And McGregor responded by saying: "Incredibly safe, sound and secure systems we have in place in Ireland.

"Nothing at all to be worried about. Two different groups of migrants up on murder charges currently.

"One a Roma family from Slovakia based here 10 years, the other an Algerian man based here 20.

"None with the ability to speak the language. All with passports. All the while the state is being sued for failing to house an other group that arrived here to no accommodation.

"All fine in the land. Don’t worry your little heads. Not a problem at all.

"Where did this van come from do we think? Talk me through this process here? Now where to go for passports and support?

"Frightening and sad scenes. Truly. We are all human. This is horrific every way you look at it.

"How to correct? How to differentiate? Terrible, terrible scenes and horrible to see what is happening in Ireland currently.

"Shame on our inhumane, tone deaf, failure of a government.

"It is inhumane to 1. Bring people here and place them in squalor, or worse again, nowhere at all, and 2. Put the people already here in absolute fear and panic and stretched out capacity in bringing these people in.

"It’s really and truly shameful and evil. All round evil, inhumane, insane stupidity.

"I’ll say it again, this government makes me ashamed to be Irish."

He continued: "Shame on you President Higgins also.

"Your address yesterday was nothing of nothing to do with Ireland. Amidst all of what is going on here and the worry we are in as a nation, you instead give your thoughts on the Middle East and on climate change.

"Showing to me and the country you have zero compassion toward the struggles the working people and families of Ireland are facing right now. Astounding!

"When will it be the priority of our elected leaders to address the challenges we face at home? My Christmas wish is for a renewed call for safety.

"Without national security everything else falls.

"Right now we are a wide open ticking time bomb being led by a bunch of finger pointers across the dail floor. "Shame on you all. General election is upcoming what are our moves? We need recovering of Irelands decision making positions.

"I am all ears for making this happen. I will back this all the way. I will rally my vote for the cause. Talk to me Ireland.."
