The Jamaica star has reacted to the blockbuster event on Sunday night

Kishane Thompson has revealed he's 'disappointed' after narrowly missing out on Olympic gold to Noah Lyles on Sunday.

The Jamaica star crossed the line with his foot first but Lyles was awarded the games' ultimate prize due to going over with his chest, which is used to establish who has won.

Thompson, for a brief moment, appeared to think he had done enough to win.

But it is Lyles who has now become an Olympic champion, with the Team USA star delighted in the aftermath of the contest.

Thompson has now broken his silence after the race.

And the Jamaica star has admitted he's disappointed, with the 23-year-old saying: "I'm a bit disappointed.

"But I'm happy at the same time. I am going to take it as what it is and move forward from here."

Given how close the race was, some have called for Olympic chiefs to let both Lyles and Thompson share the gold medal.

That previously happened at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi and Qatar's Mutaz Barshim agreed to split the award.

But Thompson can't see Lyles letting that happen, with the Jamaica star adding: "I think the sport is too competitive, no offence to any other sport.

"It's too competitive for us to share a gold medal."

He added: "I know that Jamaica would have wanted me to get the gold. Everybody loves winners."

As for Lyles, the 27-year-old was understandably delighted after winning Olympic gold.

But he showed a touch of class by expressing a belief that Thompson may have deserved the prize instead.

“It’s the one I wanted, it’s the hard battle, the amazing opponents, everybody was healthy and came to fight," he said.

“I’m the wolf among wolves. I’ll be honest, I went to Kishane, I said, ‘I’ll be honest, I think you had that one’.

“I was prepared to see his name pop up. I saw my name pop up and I said, goodness gracious, I’m incredible."

He continued: “I’m still moving forward and moving forward, when the time came and I was saying: this is the final and I’m going to need to go out there and do it.

“I wasn’t ready to see it (my name pop up) I’m going to be honest that’s the first time that I wasn’t ready to see it, he was quite a few lanes down so it was quite hard for me to picture where we were, but I guess that was a good thing.”

With Lyles winning gold, it has helped the United States go ahead of China at the top of the medals table.
