Dina Asher-Smith failed to qualify for the women's 100m final at the Paris Olympics.

Olympics icon Michael Johnson has suggested that Dina Asher-Smith came into the 100m semi-finals with the wrong mindset after the British sprinter missed out on qualifying for the final.

Asher-Smith comfortably qualified through her 100m heats on Friday with a time of 11.01.

With the Jamaican sprint trio of Shericka Jackson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah not competing in the 100m semi-finals it opened the door for the likes of Asher-Smith to make her first Olympics final.

The British sprinter was in bullish mood after her heats and claimed she 'felt ready'.

But the race didn't go to plan for the 26-year-old, who made a slow start out of the blocks and ended up finishing fifth.

Asher-Smith couldn't hide her frustration while speaking to the BBC after the race.

"I'm just disappointed because I've been running great all season," she said.

"I fully expected to make that final. The race wasn't even fast and I felt great.

"I was just disappointed with the race itself. I know I'm in a lot better shape than that.

"I just go onto the 200m now. I know I'm in great shape so I'm excited to attack that."

Asher-Smith's previous personal best of 10.83 would have been more than enough to see her qualify for the 100m final.

However, Johnson pointed out that time came five years ago and the American feels Asher-Smith should have tempered her expectations after going through a coaching change earlier this year.

"Look at the start, that's not typical," he said.

"Her arms are coming out to the side and I noticed that in the early round.

"It just doesn't look like what we've seen from her in the past.

"She's with a new coach, but I don't think he would have changed what she was doing before to that."

He added: "I would not have expected a lot this year at the beginning of the year.

"I would have expected her to come into this thinking, 'this is going to be tough for me, the standard is really high and I've got to be at my absolute best'.

"As people started to fall away - Shericka Jackson pulled out of the 100m and Elaine Thompson-Herah didn't make it - then it started to open up some space.

"But she still should have come into this thinking this is going to be tough because she hasn't ran a personal best since I think 2019.

"You have to be on that trajectory to continue to get that confidence that you can come into a championship thinking 'I'm one of the people in the conversation'.

"She should have made the final but I'm not totally shocked to be honest."
