Getafe have announced Mason Greenwood will wear the No 12 shirt for the club following his loan move from Manchester United.

The striker is set to resume his career in Spain after charges were dropped against him in February.

Greenwood was previously arrested for attempted rape and assault in January last year.

The 21-year-old was in talks with Lazio on transfer deadline day but, once that move collapsed, ended up being sent to Getafe on a temporary basis.

The La Liga side announced his move on social media.

Greenwood had previously been expected to return to the fold at United, with CEO Richard Arnold informing staff of the club's decision.

Following a backlash, however, they then performed a U-turn while confirming the striker would resume his career 'away from Old Trafford'.

Some believe the wording of their statement leaves the door open to Greenwood potentially playing for United again in the future.

Club insiders insist, however, that that's extremely unlikely to happen.

Greenwood originally wore the No 54 shirt for United upon making his debut for the club in 2019.

The striker came on during a famous 3-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

After impressing former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he then got a promotion.

The forward was handed the No 26 jersey in the 2019/2020 campaign, with the forward then wearing it for a season.

And Greenwood was then given the No 11 by United at the beginning of the 2020/2021 season, following in the footsteps of the likes of Anthony Martial, Adnan Januzaj and Ryan Giggs.

Over the weekend, Getafe boss Jose Bordalas was asked about his decision to sign Greenwood.

And, amid a backlash, he explained his decision by saying: "It is a very delicate situation to trivialise this issue.

"Every[one] knows what happened and the appropriate measures were taken, obviously, we can only talk about football.

"Regarding the other issues, I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence.

"Therefore, he is a free person, a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level.

"I have already commented what I had to comment. I can only speak on a football level.

"We all know the potential he has. He is a very young boy, he is still 21 years old and we can help him adapt to a situation.

"It’s a different league but because of the potential he has, I’m sure that if he physically reaches a good level, I’m convinced of him because of how young he is and because we’ve been informed that he obviously wants to recover his professional status and Getafe can help him in that."

Greenwood has scored 35 goals for United.

The club have since given his No 11 shirt to Rasmus Hojlund, who joined the Red Devils from Atalanta this summer.
