The Scotland international came off the bench to inspire his side to victory

Manchester United scored two late goals to stun Brentford at Old Trafford.

It had looked like being another chastening day at the office for Erik ten Hag's side after Mathias Jensen scored the give the visitors a lead.

The atmosphere in the stands at Old Trafford was toxic, with many fans booing and jeering throughout the game as tempers boiled over.

However, a late brace from Scott McTominay triggered a remarkable turnaround to give United all three points and boost their chances of reeling in the rest of the Premier League big guns.

Make no mistake about it, United weren't good.

Many of their best players on the pitch were poor and that doesn't bode well, even if Erik ten Hag can savour the moment,

They used to call Old Trafford the 'Theatre of Dreams'.

But now, more than at any other point since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement a decade ago, Manchester United's famous stadium should be called the 'Theatre of Nightmares' instead.

Gone are the days when the Red Devils were the dominant force in this country, a team that won - and won in style - under Ferguson's regime.

Obviously, United are struggling with injuries at present - with left-backs Luke Shaw, Sergio Reguilon and Tyrell Malacia among the players missing.

Ten Hag couldn't have prepared for that.

Four players who are fit and did start, however, were abysmal on the day as the Red Devils came precariously close to a seventh defeat of the season.

Firstly, Casemiro.

The Brazil international was outstanding last season after joining from Real Madrid, bringing steel and solidarity to the heart of Ten Hag's midfield.

But the Samba star has regressed alarmingly and sloppily gave the ball away in the build-up to Jensen's opener.

It was no surprise to see Casemiro hooked at half time, with Christian Eriksen coming on in his place.

Whether he can step up and regain the form that made him so popular at United last term remains to be seen.

Then there's Victor Lindelof.

Lindelof was deployed at right-back for the showdown, despite being a centre-back by trade.

However, it was a poor day at the office for the Sweden international who failed to clear the ball in the build-up to Jensen's goal.

That Lindelof is still at the club, after six inconsistent years, speaks volumes about United and their current situation.

Andre Onana was dreadful again, too.

To call the goalkeeper a flop so far following his summer move from Inter Milan would be doing him credit.

Simply put, the Cameroon international is a disaster that needs removing from the United goal as quickly as possible.

Onana was meant to be an upgrade on club icon David De Gea when he replaced the Spain international.

But the 27-year-old isn't even good enough to lace De Gea's boots.

Onana's wrists seem to be made of spaghetti, while his much-hyped kicking ability is non-existent.

The former Ajax and Inter star should have done better for Jensen's goal given it was straight at him.

But he mistimed his dive and United, for a long while, looked like paying the price.

It also spoke volumes that, with United needing a goal, Marcus Rashford was hooked.

There had been whispers before kick off that Rashford would be put on the bench and dropped. Yet despite being given yet another chance to come good, the winger failed to take it and once again failed to live up to expectations.

Rashford's 30-goal campaign last term earned him a new deal but he's not looked remotely like the same player in the time since.

But then came the McTominay show. The Scotland international has scored two vital goals to propel United up the table and spark Old Trafford into life. Whether it's a turnaround moment in a terrible season so far, however, is something only time will tell.
