Harry Kane is set to start for Bayern Munich in their Champions League clash with Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Had things gone differently, however, the forward would have been wearing the colours of the Red Devils - instead of their fellow European giants.
Kane surprised many this summer by leaving Tottenham for Bayern, having opted to try and pursue trophies in the latter stages of his career.
He has still not tasted silverware for club and country, despite his magnificent exploits in front of goal, and felt Bavaria was the best place in order for that to happen.
But while he joined Bayern, he could have ended up at United instead. Had he got his way, that move would have happened.
The Daily Mail say the 30-year-old, who has flourished during his brief spell at the Allianz Arena so far, wanted to move to United.
He was so eager to cross the divide that he'd have supposedly wound down his contract at Tottenham and joined the Red Devils in 12 months' time as a free agent.
The problem was, however, that United failed to give him the assurances he needed.
Kane wanted to know a move was a case of when, rather than if. As a 30-year-old, he knows time is of the essence.
But United never gave the green light and that means the forward had to go elsewhere, with Bayern happily snapping him up.
Erik ten Hag had made Kane his priority having steered United back into the Champions League following their absence from the competition 12 months ago with a third-placed finish.
However, they never attempted to raid their Premier League rivals with several factors behind their thinking.
One was Daniel Levy and the prospect of dealing with the Tottenham supremo.
Levy was furious when he had to sell Dimitar Berbatov to United in 2008 against his will, having previously agreed a sale with Manchester City.
In the years since, no player has been allowed to leave north London for Old Trafford.
Levy sold Luka Modric to Real Madrid in 2012 when Sir Alex Ferguson eyed a raid, while it was a similar story with Gareth Bale and David Moyes 12 months later.
Jose Mourinho courted Eric Dier in 2017, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targeting Christian Eriksen two years later.
But Levy held firm with all four players. Toby Alderweireld, it's worth noting, was also denied a move to United during Mourinho's time in charge.
United also felt Kane would be too expensive, too. And they thought he'd ask for too much in wages, which also impacted their plans.
While the club are one of the richest in world football, years of the Glazers taking dividends and weakening them behind the scenes means money can't be spent lavishly.
That's why United went for Rasmus Hojlund, a cheaper alternative, and also why they're loaning Sofyan Amrabat for the season before potentially landing the Morocco international in 12 months' time.
Fast-forward to now and it'll be fascinating to see how Kane gets on for Bayern against United.
The Bayern star is guaranteed to start and will be out to show the Red Devils exactly what they're missing.
Kane didn't get what he wanted from United.
