The golf star is set to play at Augusta, despite recently undergoing surgery

Tiger Woods sent golf fans into a frenzy on Monday with a shocking announcement on social media that he would play in next week's Masters tournament - but all isn't what it seems.

The 49-year-old golf legend posted on X: "I can't believe I am saying this, but a few weeks after rupturing my left Achilles, the sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber plus the explosive lifts my doctors and trainers have me ready to play the Masters next week! Can't wait! See y'all on the course."

Fans quickly spotted the timing of the post on April Fool's Day, however, having initially been sent into a state of ecstasy.

"I know the date you can't fool me," one fan replied.

The golf superstar had undergone surgery just three weeks prior after rupturing his Achilles tendon at his Florida home.

Woods had been preparing for a comeback when he felt a "sharp pain" in his left heel, leading to an operation on 11 March.

The 15-time major winner's hopes for a swift return to competitive golf were dashed by the serious injury.

Woods has won the Masters on five separate occasions throughout his illustrious career.

His last triumph at Augusta came in 2019, widely regarded as one of the most iconic sporting comebacks of all time.

That victory marked his 15th major championship win, cementing his legacy as one of golf's greatest players.

The Masters has been a special tournament for Woods, with his victories there spanning more than two decades.

His current injury setback raises questions about when fans might see him compete at Augusta again, however.
