Vijay Singh's withdrawal comes on the 25th anniversary on his incredible victory

Former Masters champion Vijay Singh has withdrawn from this year's tournament due to an undisclosed injury, Augusta National Golf Club announced on Monday.

The 62-year-old informed the Masters Competition Committees of his decision just three days before the first major of the year.

Singh's withdrawal comes on the 25th anniversary of his 2000 Masters victory, when he defeated a field of contenders that included Tiger Woods, David Duval and Ernie Els.

The Fijian golfer has a lifetime exemption to compete at Augusta National as a result of his 2000 triumph.

Singh recently competed in the PGA Tour Champions event in Florida, where he tied for 18th place on Sunday at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational.

He finished 12 shots behind winner Ángel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters champion, at the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton.

Despite his solid performance on the Champions tour, Singh's back injury has forced him to miss the prestigious tournament at Augusta National.

This marks the first time Singh will not participate at the Masters since making his debut in 1994.

Singh tied for 58th at last year's Masters after missing the cut in each of the previous three years.

It was his best finish at Augusta National since 2018.

The World Golf Hall of Famer has had a distinguished career at the Masters, finishing in the top eight in six of his seven starts at Augusta National between 2000 and 2006.

Singh was scheduled to make his 32nd start in the Masters this week.

In addition to his Masters victory, Singh has won the PGA Championship twice during his Hall of Fame career.

With Singh's withdrawal, the field for the 89th Masters now sits at 95 players.

This makes it the largest field since 2015, when 97 golfers competed in the tournament.

Singh is one of 17 former champions, including Tiger Woods, who will not be in the field for this year's Masters.

The first major championship of the 2025 men's golf season begins Thursday at Augusta National.

Weather could play a significant role in this year's tournament, as rain over the weekend prompted tournament officials to issue a preliminary advisory about possible course closures for Monday's practice rounds.
