Close pals Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are gunning for the lead at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry sit just one shot behind leader Sepp Straka heading into the final round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

The Irish duo both fired impressive seven-under-par rounds of 65 on Saturday to reach 15 under for the tournament.

The pair looked set to share the lead before Austria's Straka birdied his final two holes to card a 70 and edge ahead.

"Let's hope one of us does the business," said Lowry, who alongside McIlroy will be hunting down Straka's slim advantage in Sunday's finale.

The warm exchange continued with Lowry responding "Good job," to which McIlroy replied: "See you tomorrow."

The interaction highlighted the strong bond between the two competitors ahead of their Sunday showdown.

Their camaraderie stretches back many years, with McIlroy and Lowry first teaming up as part of Ireland's victorious European Amateur Team Championship squad in 2007.

Their parallel performances have been remarkable throughout this tournament, with both players making holes-in-one at Spyglass Hill on day one.

Despite struggling in the second round, they bounced back in perfect synchronisation on Saturday, each carding identical rounds of 65 to surge up the leaderboard.

The stakes are high for Sunday's final round, with a winner's prize of £2.9million from the overall £16.1million prize fund.

Neither McIlroy nor Lowry has previously claimed victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

England's Justin Rose remains in contention just two shots off the lead at 14 under, alongside Tom Kim and Cam Davis.

With such a tightly packed leaderboard, there will be little room for error as the tournament reaches its climax.
