The Briton will be hoping to secure glory in the competition later today

Rory McIlroy will face JJ Spaun in a three-hole playoff at The Players Championship today after both golfers finished tied at 12 under par.

The Northern Irishman had looked set to claim the prestigious title for the first time since 2019 after building a three-shot lead.

However, a late stumble from McIlroy coincided with a surge from the American challenger.

Spaun even had a chance to win outright on the 18th hole, but his 31-foot birdie putt fell agonisingly short.

The playoff will begin at 1pm UK time as both players battle for the coveted trophy.

McIlroy had established firm control of the tournament after the 12th hole, building what seemed an unassailable three-shot advantage.

But the world-class golfer faltered down the stretch, dropping a shot on the 14th before parring his final four holes.

Spaun seized his opportunity with impressive birdies on both the 14th and 16th holes to draw level.

The American's comeback set up a dramatic finish on the 18th green.

His birdie attempt from 31 feet would have secured an outright victory, but the ball stopped just short of the cup.

This dramatic turn of events forced today's playoff showdown between the pair.

Despite the setback, McIlroy remained confident about his chances in today's play-off.

"All day it was a bit of a battle, I'm standing here feeling like I probably should be going home with the trophy tonight," he said.

"But that's fine. I'll reset and hopefully go home with the trophy tomorrow."

The 35-year-old acknowledged missed opportunities but maintained his positive outlook.

"I feel like I gave myself chances to close the door and win this golf tournament but I didn't quite do that," McIlroy admitted.

"So I am going to have to do it the hard way."

McIlroy's final round had begun in spectacular fashion, starting four shots back at eight under par.

He immediately made his presence felt with a birdie on the first hole.

The Northern Irishman then eagled the par-five second to storm into contention.

Further birdies at the 8th and 11th holes saw him seize control of the tournament.

However, play was suspended around 5.15pm due to the threat of lightning.

The delay lasted four hours before players returned to the course.

McIlroy initially picked up where he left off, birdieing the 12th to extend his lead.

That put him on course for a 28th PGA Tour title before his late stumble.

The play-off will take place over three holes, with McIlroy and Spaun beginning their battle at the 16th hole.

They will then progress to the iconic 17th island green before finishing on the challenging 18th.

This three-hole format will determine who claims the prestigious Players Championship title.
