The Northern Irishman won his first major tournament since 2014, completing his career Grand Slam

GB News hosts Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner have called for golf champion Rory McIlroy to be honoured with a knighthood, following his historic victory at the Masters on Sunday.

McIlroy, 35, claimed victory at the 89th Masters Tournament after a dramatic play-off with Justin Rose, ending an 11-year major championship drought.

The win at Augusta completes his career Grand Slam, joining an elite group of just five other golfers who have won all four major championships.

Reacting to his win, McIlroy was overcome with emotion as he declared the feat was a "dream come true".

Discussing the golfer on GB News, Britain's Newsroom hosts Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner hailed McIlroy, and agreed the sportsman should be honoured with a knighthood.

Andrew told their viewers: "Rory McIlroy - this is the first time Bev and I have ever discussed golf in any TV or radio situation.

"But we both take the view that the Government should give him a knighthood."

Agreeing with Andrew, Bev was optimistic that the honour would happen, declaring: "He will get a knighthood. He will."

Highlighting the significance of McIlroy's win, Andrew emphasised that there are only "five others" who have achieved the same Grand Slam title.

Andrew said: "Andy Murray got a knighthood for winning Wimbledon - Rory McIlroy has done something only five other men have done in history.

"He's won a Grand Slam."

Reaffirming her support for the cause, Bev felt decisive, stating McIlroy "will get the knighthood", adding "of course he will".

Heaping praise on the sportsman, Andrew concluded: "He's also a rather good advocate for sport, because he's articulate and clever and charming - and looks good."

For over a decade, McIlroy had come close at the Masters without claiming the coveted green jacket.

His triumph on Monday morning ends years of frustration at the tournament that had become his greatest challenge.

As the second-ranked golfer in the world, McIlroy has now cemented his legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.
