Football fans have piled into Wayne Rooney and urged the 39-year-old to retire from management following his departure from Plymouth on Tuesday.

The former Manchester United, Everton, DC United and Derby County star has been relieved of his duties following a difficult season with the Championship side.


Plymouth have confirmed that Rooney, along with Mike Phelan and Simon Ireland, will be leaving the club.

They will set to imminently start hunting for a replacement, with the Pilgrims currently rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.

Regarding Rooney, he's yet to really make it as a manager.

His difficult spell in charge of Plymouth came after a dire stint with Birmingham, while he's also managed Derby and DC United in the past.

And some football fans on social media have now urged Rooney to turn his back on coaching, having struggled to live up to expectations in recent years.

"Can Wayne Rooney retire from managing already? He's absolutely shocking," said one supporter.

A second stated: "At this point Rooney should retire from coaching as well."

Another opined: "Wayne Rooney has never been a manager and should retire from football."

A fourth said: "Rooney should retire from coaching,it's not his thing, every team he joins,he sends them in relegation."

And a fifth weighed in by saying: "Coaching is not for you Wayne Rooney just retire and rest."

Rooney is unlikely to throw in the towel just yet.

But there's a sense that he could continue to struggle as a manager given how his coaching career has panned out so far.

Meanwhile, Rooney has opened up in the wake of his exit from Plymouth.

The veteran thanked the board for their suppport, while also lavishing praise on the fans who have cheered him on week in, week out.
