Wayne Rooney has revealed that he'd like to return to football management, despite recently losing his job at Plymouth.

The Manchester United and Everton icon, who is widely considered one of the best players of his generation, has struggled in the dugout so far.

After mixed spells with Derby County and D.C United, he took the Birmingham job last year - only to end up being sacked after just a few months in charge.

He was then axed by Plymouth on New Year's Eve after a disastrous campaign that has seen the Pilgrims tumble into a relegation battle.

Many have been quick to dismiss Rooney's chances of ever managing a football team again.

But the England icon, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, has insisted he's determined to give management another crack despite his issues so far.

"I would like to go back in [to management]," he said.

"But it would have to be the right club. Certainly the right club."

Gary Neville, also appearing on the podcast, was stunned by Rooney's admission.

Neville previously struggled in management himself, with his spell at Valencia considered one of the worst of all time.

But Rooney stuck to his guns, with the veteran adding: "I think you always have that ego don't you?

"You always have that confidence you could go in and get the best out of a bad or difficult situation.

That's something the former striker agreed with, acknowledging that each of the sides he's managed so far have been in a 'challenging situation'.

Rooney also revealed that he'd have 'no problem' taking over an Under-21s team or working on somebody elses coaching staff.

However, as things stand, it's unclear what the future holds for the United and Everton legend.

Meanwhile, former footballer Don Goodman recently suggested that Rooney should try and land a coaching job at Manchester City - despite playing for their fierce rivals.

He said: "I remember him joking about going to Manchester City and learning from Pep Guardiola previously.

"It sounds funny but it wouldn't be the worst idea, would it when you look at what Mikel Arteta [Arsenal manager] and Enzo Maresca [Chelsea manager] learned?!

"Obviously, that’s probably a non-starter but Coleen's been in the jungle so they might want to take some family time.

"He was an excellent as a pundit in the summer at the Euro’s and I’d imagine people would like to see him do it again.

"My best guess though, is that he'd like to get back in football in a ‘hands-on’ capacity.”
