Wayne Rooney was recently sacked by Plymouth Argyle after a shocking turn of form

Wayne Rooney could be set for a return to management with Salford City FC, less than an hour's drive from his Cheshire home.

The former Manchester United star has been out of work since his sacking from Plymouth Argyle in December.

According to reports, Rooney is being linked with the League Two club as a potential new managerial appointment.

The role would allow the 39-year-old to remain based at the family's Cheshire mansion whilst resuming his coaching career.

Salford City, currently ninth in League Two, could be looking for new leadership if they fail to secure promotion this season.

Coleen Rooney is reportedly becoming increasingly "antsy" about her husband's constant presence at their Cheshire home.

Sources claim the novelty of having Wayne back full-time has "quickly worn off" following his return after being sacked by Plymouth.

An insider told HeatWorld that while Coleen was initially "delighted" when Wayne moved home, he is now "getting under her feet".

The mother-of-four is said to run "a very tight ship" to manage family life, but Wayne's less organised approach has reportedly disrupted her routine.

The source suggests Coleen is keen for her husband to return to work after nearly three months at home.

"Coleen was so used to doing things her way and now he's always there," the source told HeatWorld.

"There's talk of Wayne getting another managerial role at Salford City FC, which is music to Coleen's ears."

Karl Robinson is currently head coach at Salford City, but his position could be under threat if promotion isn't secured.

The source also revealed that Coleen "knows he can't not work" despite wanting him close to home."

There's also talk of him joining Match Of The Day as a pundit, which would be perfect as it's filmed in Manchester," the insider added.

This would mean minimal travel time for the former England captain.

Reports suggest Coleen is happier having Wayne nearby where she can "keep a closer eye" on him.

This follows concerns about his behaviour when left "to his own devices".

Meanwhile, Rooney may be monitoring Salford's League Two campaign closely as they currently sit ninth in the table.
