Wayne Rooney has lavished praise on Marcus Rashford after the Aston Villa star impressed in his side's 3-2 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

The England international provided a stunning assist for Ezri Konsa as Unai Emery's side beat their European rivals.

However, it still wasn't enough with Villa exiting the competition after a 5-4 aggregate defeat.

Rashford is currently on loan at Villa from Manchester United, having failed to win round Ruben Amorim prior to his departure from Old Trafford.

But Rooney, speaking on Amazon Prime, has insisted he feels the forward still has a future at United based on his performance last night.

"I hope Rashford goes back to Manchester United and performs like he did tonight," he said.

"That’s what we all want to see as Manchester United fans."

Achraf Hakimi put PSG ahead after 11 minutes, with Nuno Mendes then finding the net shortly after.

Villa came roaring back, however, with Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Konsa all on target.

Emery has been coy when asked about Rashford, with the Spaniard fully aware that it'll be tough to recruit the 27-year-old on a permanent basis.

Rooney doesn't want that to happen and believes the England star deserves another chance at United, especially given the issues Amorim's team have endured this term.

"Marcus Rashford wants to play for Manchester United, 100 per cent," he continued.

"He's a Manchester lad, a Manchester United fan.

"He needed to play and it was clear he wasn't going to play for the rest of the season.

"Sometimes, you have to put the manager in a position where he cannot leave you out.

"Marcus Rashford, in an ideal world, would want to play and leave a legacy at Manchester United.

"Whether that's possible, I don't know, but that's what I'd love to see."

Emery, meanwhile, refused to be drawn on Rashford's future after the defeat at Villa Park.

He did, however, insist they were 'happy' with how the attacker has been performing.

"It is difficult to plan it now," he said.

"He is feeling better and he played a fantastic match. We are very happy.

"If he is happy, we are happy. It depends on the circumstances for now and the next weeks."
