The former Manchester United and Everton star has made his feelings clear

Wayne Rooney has hit out at Virgil van Dijk after PSG sent Liverpool crashing out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Reds were eliminated on penalties after Ousmane Dembele's goal in the 12th minute had drawn the Ligue 1 giants level on aggregate following Harvey Elliot's dramatic late strike in the Parc des Princes last week.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was the hero for PSG, with the Italy international denying both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from 12 yards.

However, despite the Liverpool pair missing, it's Van Dijk that Rooney blames for the Reds' elimination from the competition.

Dembele's goal in the 12th minute came after the former Southampton and Celtic star hadn't done enough to prevent it.

And Rooney, speaking on Amazon Prime, has branded Van Dijk 'lazy' and suggested he's to blame for Liverpool's failure to go through to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

“This goal from Liverpool’s perspective is wrong in so many ways," he said.

"They are trying to press the ball and Van Dijk gets lazy.

"If you keep your eye on Van Dijk, he’s walking and leaves a massive gap to Dembele.

"All he has to do is come across and cover Dembele because there is no other pass for Paris to get out and he doesn’t.

“Dembele gets it and he’s got a lot of space, gets the ball out wide and then Konate doesn’t switch on and then he reacts.

"Dembele makes a good run and gets a tap in.”

Dembele has often blown hot and cold during the course of his career.

However, after previous stints with Rennes, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona, he's now in the form of his life at PSG.

Dembele has more goals in 2025 than an other player, with the France international key to his side's chances of glory.

Meanwhile, PSG boss Luis Enrique was thrilled with his side's victory - with the Spaniard also showing class by suggesting both sides deserved to advance.
