Virgil van Dijk is closing in on a new contract at Liverpool, following news this week that Mohamed Salah is set to do the same

Virgil van Dijk is closing in on a new contract with Liverpool, GB News understands, in a huge boost to the club.

It comes after news broke that Liverpool and Mohamed Salah were on the brink of penning a new deal.

Both Van Dijk and Salah will see their contracts expire at the end of the season and Liverpool were facing a huge exodus.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the other key player making up the trio of key players whose deals come to an end on June 30, while he is closing in on a free transfer to Real Madrid.

Losing the defender, who came up through the Liverpool academy at the age of six, will be a crucial blow to the Reds, no doubt.

However, Liverpool look set to retain the other two with Van Dijk set to pen a new deal with the club imminently, GB News understands.

It is further understood that the Netherlands international will pen a two-year extension that will keep him at the club until 2027.

Alongside Salah signing a new deal, dampening talk of a move to Saudi Arabia, that is a huge boost to Arne Slot.

The Dutch manager had been desperate to retain all three but keeping Van Dijk and Salah, who have been crucial to Liverpool's title charge, will still be welcomed by Slot.

Speculation over Van Dijk's future had been rampant all season while few updates were provided by club and player.

There had been talk that Paris Saint-Germain were interested in the former Southampton man, as well as Real Madrid and clubs in Italy.

But no firm bids arrived for Van Dijk, who has been free to speak to foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement from January.

The 33-year-old has been one of the best centre-backs in recent history in the Premier League.

During his eight years at Anfield, he has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup and has been named in four PFA Team of the Years.

He was also awarded the PFA Players' Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Year and UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2019.

And the defender looks set to add further trophies to his cabinet this year with Liverpool closing in on the Premier League title.

The Reds are 11 points clear at the top of the table, with Arsenal sitting behind with seven games to go.
