Troy Deeney has been dismissed after a whirlwind run as Forest Green Rovers manager.

Troy Deeney has been sacked as manager of Forest Green Rovers after just six games in charge of the struggling League Two side.

Deeney was appointed as Forest Green's manager back on December 20 in a surprise move.

It was the former Watford striker's first managerial role in professional football having originally joined the club as a player-coach at the start of the season.

But Deeney caused a stir just nine days into his new role when he was shown a red card during Forest Green's game against Swindon.

Results failed to improve with Forest Green's loss to Harrogate Town last week resulting in Deeney launching a stunning attack on his own players.

He said there were "too many babies" in his squad and singled out Fankaty Dabo's display.

Deeney apologised later on, but it appears to be too little too late with Forest Green parting ways with the former Premier League star.

Forest Green's chairman, Dale Vince, released a brief statement on the club's website to confirm the news.

Vince said: “These are decisions nobody likes to make, but we have acted this way to give FGR the best possible chance of improving results and climbing the league table.

"We wish Troy all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts."

The statement also added that goalkeeper coach Dan Connor will take charge of the team for their game against Gillingham on Saturday.

His dismissal came just hours after Deeney was handed a four-match touchline ban for his red card against Swindon.

The 35-year-old was charged by the FA with using "improper and/or abusive and/or threatening behaviour and/or language".

He was also issued a £1,500 fine by an independent regulatory commission.
