The Australian has been criticised amid his side's inconsistent performances

Gus Poyet has defended Ange Postecoglou amid Tottenham's mixed start to the new Premier League season.

Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League table during the Australian's maiden campaign in the dugout, with only Aston Villa, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City finishing higher.

Tottenham have, however, struggled for consistency so far.

Though they were impressive during their victory over Manchester United at the end of last month, they through away a 2-0 lead to crash to defeat against Brighton before the international break.

At the time of writing, Tottenham have picked up just 10 points to sit ninth in the table.]

Yet Poyet, speaking exclusively to GB News via Cricket betting app, has now defended Postecoglou and backed him to turn things around.

"Absolutely," he said when asked if his old side can win a trophy.

"Spurs are in three cup competitions this season, the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

There is no reason Ange can’t lift one of these for Spurs this season.

"Spurs have the credentials to be a good cup side and with that big win at Manchester United, they can take this good form into the cup competitions.

"Spurs have a good record at home to Man City in recent seasons, so they have them at home in the Carabao, so can give it their best shot to qualify to the next round."

One criticism levelled at Postecoglou is that Tottenham's style of play is too risky.

They're certainly pleasing on the eye.

Yet Spurs often leave themselves vulnerable at the back, too.

However, Poyet enjoys their style of play and thinks Postecoglou's tactical approach will pay off in the long run.

"It’s risk vs reward and Ange is adamant this is the type of football and way he wants his Spurs team to play," he continued.
