The German is preparing to take charge of the Three Lions for the first time

Thomas Tuchel has aimed a dig at Gareth Southgate by saying England lacked a 'clear playing style' at the European Championships last summer.

The Three Lions made the final of the competition before losing 2-1 to Spain.

However, England were unconvincing throughout large periods and needed to dig deep to secure victories over the likes of Slovakia and Switzerland.

Southgate did well during his time in the dugout, with the Three Lions making the final of two major tournaments.

But Tuchel, as a serial winner who has secured silverware with the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, PSG and Borussia Dortmund, has been brought in to drag England over the line.

Now, speaking to ITV, the 51-year-old has aimed a dig at Southgate by criticising the way his team were set up during the Euros.

"Not last summer, no [they didn't have a clear playing style]," he said.

"The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns, the freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger [was missing].

"They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament in my observation than having the excitement and hunger to win it.

"[What has been missing] is the people feel that that is the team to beat. That we arrive with a group to beat. That we know already when we arrive, once we qualify and arrive that everyone knows this is the team to beat."

Tuchel has already shown he's not afraid to be bold.

He's given Dan Burn his first international call-up, days after the Newcastle star inspired his team to Carabao Cup glory.

And Jordan Henderson is back in the fold, too, at the ripe age of 34.

Another player selected is Morgan Rogers, who has been in outstanding form for Aston Villa this season.

And the England star says he's been blown away by Tuchel's 'aura' during their short time working together.

"When I met him his aura and demeanour is hard to explain to describe but he has that level of confidence, that level of respect already," he said.

"You can see the way he is, the way he acts. He has been so chilled and calm.

"But when it is time to work, it is time to work.

"That is the kind of vibe I have got off him from the day or so I have been here. It is really good so far. I am really enjoying it.

"You know what he has done in the game and the respect he has got from managers and players he has worked with.

"You know he is coming in with some serious ideas and it is about taking it on board and learning from it."

England will be aiming to qualify for the 2026 World Cup under Tuchel. The last time they failed to make a major tournament was when they lost 2-1 to Croatia in 2007 and missed out on playing at the European Championships 12 months later.
