England had made Thomas Tuchel their top target to replace Gareth Southgate

Thomas Tuchel has reached an agreement with the FA to become the new England manager.

It comes after the FA made the German their top target to replace Gareth Southgate, having sounded out Pep Guardiola earlier in the season.

The former Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager has extensive experience at club level, having led the Blues to Champions League glory in 2021.

However, Tuchel has never coached an international team while England have not had a foreign manager since Fabio Capello in 2012.

According to The Times, Tuchel and the FA reached a rapid conclusion during negotiations and an announcement will be made this week.

The arrival of the 51-year-old will put to bed any speculation that has bugged the England camp over the last two international breaks.

Interim coach Lee Carsley has had to field questions about his own future and intentions, often giving muddled answers.

But the FA have taken action by deciding on a top target and getting their man.

Other options that had been considered including Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, as well as Guardiola, who is out of contract at the end of the season with Manchester City.

Tuchel has been unemployed since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season but also has top clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund on his CV.

Mark Bullingham, the FA chief executive, and technical director John McDermott were desperate to clinch an agreement with the Krumbach-born coach and will be relieved to end any confusion over the role.

Tuchel also will join a squad where he already has close bonds with some of the players.

Not least captain Harry Kane, who he signed as Bayern Munich boss in 2023 after telling the club to pay whatever was needed to sign him.

He also knows Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher from his time at Chelsea.
