Emma Saunders is already battling thyroid cancer

Sky Sports presenter Emma Saunders has revealed she is recovering from encephalitis, a brain infection, whilst already battling thyroid cancer.

The touchline reporter shared the news with her followers on Instagram on Friday, posting a photo from her hospital bed.


Saunders had previously missed the start of the 2024-25 season whilst receiving treatment for thyroid cancer.

She now faces another health challenge as she steps away from her presenting duties.

In her Instagram post, Saunders wrote: "Unfortunately life took a bit of an unexpected turn a couple of weeks ago and I'm now off work while I recover from Encephalitis - an infection of the brain."

She added: "I hope it won't be long until I'm back to see out the end of 2024/25."

The presenter thanked her family, friends, Sky colleagues and the NHS for their support during this difficult time.

Saunders' Sky Sports colleagues were quick to offer their support.

Soccer Saturday host Simon Thomas commented: "So sorry to hear you've gone through this Emma. You're missed! Look after yourself and hope you're feeling much better soon."

Commentator Pien Meulensteen wrote: "Oh Emma, wishing you a speedy recovery and sending lots of love."

Sky Sports News presenter Hayley McQueen added she was "shocked" and sent "much love".

Former striker turned pundit Chris Iwelumo also sent "love and positivity".

In her post, Saunders also thanked her partner, football manager Will Still, "just for being you & being there for me".

The couple began dating last year and went public with their relationship during Euro 2024.

Still, 32, is currently in charge of French Ligue 1 club Lens, having previously made his name at Reims.

The pair have been sharing photos of each other on social media since confirming their relationship.

Saunders is a familiar face on Sky Sports' football coverage, particularly with EFL broadcasts.

She has also worked on Premier League programmes and interviewed many top players.

Beyond Sky, Saunders has served as a stadium presenter for England internationals, the World Cup and Six Nations rugby matches.

Messages of support flooded in from across the football community.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes posted: "Oh Emma sorry to hear this, my prayers are for you to be 100% fine very soon."

England international Kyle Walker commented: "Sending you love".

TNT Sports presenter Becky Ives wrote: "Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry to read this! Sending you so much love & wishing you a speedy recovery!"

Emma Paton, Clinton Morrison and Ben Foster were also among those offering well wishes.
