A new European Super League proposal has been launched following a ruling against FIFA and UEFA on Thursday.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has promised football fans that he will "make sure the European Super League doesn't happen" if he becomes Prime Minister after the next general election.

The European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that FIFA and UEFA had acted "unlawfully" in threatening sanctions against clubs that had signed up for the controversial Super League.

The original plans led to widespread protests throughout Europe with the Royal Family and then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson also speaking out against the ESL.

But the prospect of a Super League is back on after the European Court of Justice's decision as new plans were launched just minutes after the ruling.

A22, the management organisation brought in to sponsor the Super League, announced the revamped proposal with a host of new promises made.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only two clubs who have maintained an interest in joining a Super League with the former's president, Florentino Perez, a big backer of the breakaway competition.

All English clubs who were originally signed up for the project back in 2021 have distanced themselves from the revamped version, committing themselves to UEFA.

And Sir Starmer has now weighed in on social media, insisting he will not allow a Super League to be formed if he is voted as the country's next Prime Minister.

"For too long, football fans have been treated as an afterthought," Starmer wrote on X.

"If I’m Prime Minister, I’ll make sure the European Super League doesn’t happen.

"It's time to start putting fans first."

His comments come a day after Rishi Sunak's Government confirmed all English clubs would be banned from joining any European Super League under new legislation set to be brought forward for 2024.

The UK's Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport released a statement which read: “We took decisive action at the time by triggering the fan-led review of football governance, which called for the creation of a new independent regulator for English football.

"We will shortly be bringing forward legislation that makes this a reality, and will stop clubs from joining any similar breakaway competitions in the future.”

Johnson condemned the original European Super League proposals during his time as Prime Minister, threatening to unleash a "legislative bomb".

He said: “We should drop a legislative bomb to stop it – and we should do it now.”
