Manchester United supporters have apologised to Sir Alex Ferguson for their club's decline after Liverpool won the Premier League title on Sunday.

The Reds thumped Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield to secure their 20th league crown, with Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and an own goal from Destiny Udogie propelling them to victory.

When Ferguson left United in 2013, the club were two crowns clear of their fierce rivals.

They are now level on 20 each, however, with Liverpool also winning the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp back in 2020.

United have got nowhere near the country's biggest prize since their legendary boss walked off into the sunset.

And fans on X have apologised to Ferguson, with many saddened to see their rivals so far ahead.

"We are sorry Sir Alex Ferguson. We let Liverpool catch up," said one user, who shared a pic of Ferguson at the time of his arrival and time of his departure - as well as the big difference in league titles at the respective times.

A second stated: "We let him down."

Another wrote: "We failed you Sir Alex all that hard work is now gone. Sorry boss."

And a fourth fan said: "United really fell off after SAF left."

United were champions when Ferguson departed in 2013, with David Moyes installed as his replacement.

Moyes lasted just 10 months before being relieved of his duties, however, while the club have hired and fired the likes of Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag in the years since.

Ruben Amorim is currently manager of the fallen giants.

But the Red Devils' form has been poor under the 40-year-old, with United currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

Liverpool, meanwhile, celebrated wildly on Sunday after winning the title in front of their own fans.

It was something few saw coming when Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp last summer.

But Slot was delighted with his side's title triumph, with the 46-year-old showing class by praising Klopp and the legacy he left behind.

"It feels great," he said. "I don't think I want to say a lot.

"The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp."

He added: "I am 99.9 per cent sure that if I pick up my phone there will be a message from Jurgen.

"So many moments in the season the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me.

"But what mattered most is the team he left behind that was able to win the trophy."
