The Hollywood stars have invested millions into Wrexham since taking over

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have launched a humorous campaign urging Wrexham AFC supporters to purchase discounted merchandise to help with the financial demands of running the club.

The co-owners released a promotional video highlighting the club's 50% sale on all kits until 5 March.

In the self-deprecating advert, the duo candidly reveal the financial realities of owning a football club, with Reynolds comparing it to "lighting money on fire".

The campaign offers a rare glimpse into the financial challenges facing the ambitious League One side.

"Running a football club is like lighting money on fire," Reynolds says in the video. "Except it doesn't keep you warm."

McElhenney adds: "Picture a black hole. Now throw your wallet in it."

The pair repeatedly urge fans to "act now" on the kit sale.

Reynolds quips: "You may think it's all fun and games.

"But you haven't received a call from Rob McElhenney at 3am screaming bloody murder, 'This thing is bleeding me dry every single f***ing week!'"

Since taking over Wrexham in 2020, Reynolds and McElhenney are believed to have invested around £20m into the club.

The financial burden was highlighted in a 2023 episode of their 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary, where they learned about a $12 million loss.

The Hollywood duo have reset the club's transfer record eight times in five years.

In January, they broke their transfer record again to sign Reading's Sam Smith and acquired former Premier League forward Jay Rodriguez.

Wrexham are currently third in EFL League One with 13 games remaining in the season.

The club has ambitious plans for the future, including a "shiny new" Kop stadium development.

Reynolds quickly labelled these plans as "expensive" in the promotional video.

The owners' investment has helped guide Wrexham to successive promotions through the fourth and fifth divisions of English football.

Their goal appears to be continuing the club's climb up the English football pyramid.

The campaign proved so effective that fans attempting to make purchases overwhelmed the club's website.

This led to temporary crashes and timeouts on Wrexham's online store.

Some social media users joked that Reynolds and McElhenney's plea was so persuasive it unintentionally crippled the club's website.

The sale runs until 5 March, giving supporters limited time to take advantage of the half-price offer.

The owners' celebrity status has given Wrexham's marketing campaign an edge over other clubs in the division.
