Ruud van Nistelrooy reveals Erik ten Hag's true thoughts on Man Utd sack after private conversation

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Manchester United's interim manager, has revealed Erik ten Hag's reaction to his recent sacking from the club.

The former United striker, who stepped up from his role as assistant manager, disclosed that Ten Hag was "disappointed and touched" by the decision.

Van Nistelrooy shared details of his conversations with Ten Hag, highlighting the Dutchman's deep care for the club.

"He was disappointed and touched because he really cared for the club," Van Nistelrooy told reporters on Thursday.

Despite the hurt, Ten Hag reportedly remains proud of his achievements at Old Trafford, particularly winning two cups during his tenure.

Van Nistelrooy elaborated on Ten Hag's emotional state, saying, "I saw him on Monday and spoke to him before the game.

The first conversations we had when I came back to the club, I felt he cared and loved the club and wanted to bring the club forward."

The interim boss emphasised Ten Hag's commitment to United's progress.

"That's why he's also hurt that he had to leave but also proud of his achievement here winning the two cups," Van Nistelrooy added.

These revelations offer insight into Ten Hag's deep connection with Manchester United, despite his relatively short tenure at the helm.

Van Nistelrooy has taken on the role of caretaker manager following Ten Hag's departure. In his first match at the helm, he oversaw a convincing 5-2 victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The former striker was present at the training ground on Monday when Ten Hag received the news of his dismissal from chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Despite the sudden change, Van Nistelrooy remains committed to the club. He stated, "It's going to be a short job as an interim – that was communicated very clearly, and I was happy with that. I felt I was called upon to help the club in this situation."

Van Nistelrooy expressed his intention to remain at Manchester United beyond his interim role.

He stated, "After this I go back to my assistant contract I have here for this season and the next. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club forward."

"It was very disappointing that Erik had to leave but then you have to switch the mind-set to win," Van Nistelrooy said.
