Ruben Amorim reportedly intended to leave Sporting Lisbon at the end of the season, rather than now, but appears set to perform a U-turn in order to become the new manager of Manchester United.
The Red Devils parted ways with Erik ten Hag on Monday, less than 21 hours from their nightmare 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.
United had stuck with Ten Hag back in the summer after he'd steered the club to FA Cup glory.
That decision was made despite the fallen giants finishing eighth in the Premier League table, their lowest-placed finish in history.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of United on an interim basis, with the Red Devils set to face Leicester in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
But all signs currently point to Amorim taking charge at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese was linked with jobs at West Ham and Liverpool earlier in the year, only for the 39-year-old to end up staying in his homeland.
According to the Daily Mail, Amorim intended to stay at Sporting until the end of the season at least.

But that now looks set to change, with the young boss open to taking charge at United.
Amorim has long been seen as the frontrunner to replace Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard eventually opts to call it a day at Manchester City.
Yet United now look set to steal a march on their rivals.
As for Ten Hag, the 54-year-old was informed of his sacking on Tuesday morning - and he immediately jetted off to the Netherlands after being told he was surplus to requirements.

His reign started in the summer of 2022, with United losing their first two fixtures to Brighton and Brentford respectively that year.
Ten Hag did manage to steady the ship, helping the Red Devils win the Carabao Cup in 2023 after jettisoning Cristiano Ronaldo.
Truthfully, however, United have never been consistent on his watch.
He was fortunate to survive last term after the club endured their worst-ever Premier League campaign, even if their 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup was impressive.

Two players who did shine under the Dutchman were Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Both stars have paid tribute to Ten Hag, with Garnacho writing on social media: "Thank you for everything, boss.I will always be grateful to you for giving me the opportunity and the confidence to play for this club.
"It hasn’t gone as well as we wanted, but I will remember the good times we had together and I wish you all the best in the future. Thank you very much Erik."
