Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has offered a cryptic response to questions about the club's pursuit of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Spanish giants are weighing up whether to make a £20 million bid for the England right-back, who becomes a free agent this summer.

When pressed about potential January signings at a press conference ahead of Real Madrid's match against Valencia, Ancelotti would only say: "We will see."

The Champions League holders were already rebuffed when they made an initial enquiry about Alexander-Arnold's availability just days ago.

The 26-year-old Liverpool academy graduate can now legally discuss terms with foreign clubs ahead of a potential summer move.

Sources in Madrid suggest they are prepared to make a second approach with a firm £20 million offer to sign Alexander-Arnold this month rather than wait until summer.

The Spanish club's renewed interest comes as they struggle with right-back options following Dani Carvajal's season-ending knee injury.

Ancelotti is said to be personally driving Madrid's pursuit of the Liverpool defender during the January window.

Liverpool, however, are not expected to change their stance despite the risk of losing Alexander-Arnold for free in six months.

The Merseyside club remain focused on their Premier League title challenge, where they currently sit six points clear at the top of the table.

Expanding on his initial response, Ancelotti told reporters: "It is difficult for me to talk about that in this context. But we are going to have to wait and see."

The Italian manager repeatedly deflected questions about transfer plans during Thursday's press conference.

"We are focused on all these games in January and the game tomorrow and I've got nothing more to say. It's not sensible for me to speak about the market right now," he said.

Ancelotti added: "I don't want to talk about it because I don't think it's the right time to talk about it here. We'll see what happens, but I'm delighted with the squad we have."

Liverpool are still hoping to broker a new deal to keep Alexander-Arnold at the club, with dialogue ongoing for several months.

The club have received no indication that Alexander-Arnold wishes to leave Anfield.

When asked about his future last month, Alexander-Arnold said: "I have been at the club 20 years now and I have signed four or five contract extensions... and none of those have been played out in public. This one won't be either."

The defender's brother Tyler, who manages his interests, remains in discussions with Liverpool over a potential extension.

However, this is unlikely to stop Madrid from continuing their pursuit of the England international.
