Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 3-1 at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final

Paris Saint-Germain will take a commanding two-goal advantage into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final after defeating Aston Villa 3-1 at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions, who lifted the Ligue 1 trophy last weekend, responded brilliantly after falling behind to Morgan Rogers' first-half strike.

Spectacular goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia turned the tide for PSG before Nuno Mendes added a third in stoppage time.

The result ended Villa's impressive seven-match winning streak as they competed in the latter stages of Europe's elite club competition.

The return leg at Villa Park next Wednesday will determine which side advances to the semi-finals.

Villa stunned the hosts by taking the lead in the 35th minute through a well-crafted move.

John McGinn won possession on the halfway line before finding Marcus Rashford with a sweeping cross-field pass.

The forward played in Youri Tielemans down the left flank, who delivered a perfect ball across the face of goal.

Morgan Rogers arrived to finish from close range, sending the travelling supporters into raptures.

It was Rogers' 14th goal of the season and his fourth in European competition.

The clinical finish demonstrated Villa's threat on the counter-attack despite PSG's dominance in possession during the early exchanges.

Villa's joy was short-lived as PSG responded with a moment of brilliance just four minutes later.

Desire Doue drifted in from the left, evaded Rogers, and unleashed an unstoppable 20-yard strike that found the net via the underside of the crossbar.

The lively Doue continued to trouble Villa's defence until half-time.

PSG carried their momentum into the second half and took the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

After receiving the ball from Fabian Ruiz on the left, the Georgian winger made light work of getting past Axel Disasi.

He then rifled a spectacular shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle, finding the net off the near post.

The hosts remained dominant, with Achraf Hakimi among those going close to extending their lead.

Villa appeared to be heading for a respectable one-goal deficit until the dying moments of the match.

In the 92nd minute, Ousmane Dembele played a through ball to Nuno Mendes, who advanced into the penalty area.

The defender skilfully turned both his marker and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before calmly slotting home PSG's third goal.

Despite the setback, Villa's well-organised and resolute performance keeps the tie somewhat in the balance.

Unai Emery's side will need to overturn the two-goal deficit when they welcome PSG to Villa Park next Wednesday.

The winners will secure a coveted place in the Champions League semi-finals.
