The England international struggled during Sunday's showdown at Old Trafford

Manchester United have responded after a section of supporters targeted Phil Foden with chants about his mother during Sunday's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

The England international's mum, Claire Rowlands, was cruelly called a 's**g' during the drab contest.

It has proven to be a big talking point in the short time since, with Pep Guardiola criticising the actions of United supporters.

He has accused them of a 'lack of class' and also said they should be 'ashamed' of themselves, too.

Per the Daily Mail, City are said to be 'shocked' and 'disgusted' at the sheer amount of fans chanting from the sidelines.

And the publication says that United sources have condemned the abusive chants against all players.

Rowlands previously found herself in the public eye in January 2024, when footage emerged showing her being thrown out of a Welsh nightclub.

The 44-year-old was also filmed aggressively confronting police officers who had been called to deal with the incident.

The chants about Rowlands capped off a disappointing day for Foden, who failed to impact proceedings.

He was replaced by Jeremy Doku in the second half and continues to look a shadow of the player that electrified the Premier League last year.

But Guardiola, speaking post-match, defended Foden and downplayed suggestions the England star was struggling for confidence.

"When the team is not playing at the level that we had, it looks like everyone is not what they were," he said.

"I see the passion and smile on his face every day in training and that is what I want.

"You see the numbers of players who have been four, five, six years.

"This year we drop and it's all of them - that's why we are struggling to win but the quality is there.

"He won the Premier League in the last games [last year], in the game against West Ham with two goals. His impact was incredible and he will be back."

Meanwhile, Troy Deeney has controversially claimed the chants about Foden's mother have been blown out of proportion - and that it's merely 'part of the game'.

“[It is] part of the game, unfortunately,” he said on talkSPORT.

“It is what it is, I’ve heard people say things about my kids, wife… you name it.

“Look, I take Pep’s point – it is a reflection on society…. everyone's relatively glass houses they like to look out and point and say, ‘you’re rubbish, this and that’.

“But I also think as well, it’s a derby, people are emotional… you talk about someone’s mum so you never want it to be that.

"It's just part of football. This, in my opinion, is a bigger story than it needs to be.

“It’s been made a bigger story because Pep’s brought it to everyone’s attention.

“Watching the game, I didn’t hear it. [On] Match of the day we didn’t do anything on it, unfortunately, it’s the ugly side of this football game.

“There’s an old saying many many years ago that Gianfranco Zola told me and it was ‘We’re paid to have no feelings’."
