The Manchester City star has opened up amid his recent return to form

Phil Foden has aimed a dig at Gareth Southgate by suggesting he was 'frustrated' with his position for England at the European Championships back in the summer.

The Manchester City winger flourished under Pep Guardiola last term as the club won the Premier League title for the fourth year on the trot.

But Foden was used out wide by Southgate at Euro 2024, with England struggling throughout the tournament despite making the final.

Though the Three Lions came up short, Southgate was recently knighted - having stepped down following his team's failure to go all the way.

Foden has recently returned to form with City after toiling at the start of the season.

And the 24-year-old has now aimed a dig at Southgate by admitting he was 'frustrated' with how he was used at Euro 2024.

"I feel frustrated I didn't get out what I wanted to," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game.

"Coming off last season - being the best player in the Premier League and playing centre midfield - I do feel the position was quite difficult to get used to."

Though England made the final, where they lost to Spain, they never really got going at the tournament out in Germany.

They needed extra-time to get the better of Slovakia, while penalties were needed to see off Switzerland.

And Foden admits that England didn't click, adding: "I'm the one who can play multiple positions and I had to try and deal with it the best I could.

"I don't feel like England ever got going or performed to our potential."

City, like Foden, haven't been their usual selves this term.

They are currently fighting to qualify for the Champions League, rather than going for a fifth league title on the trot.

And Foden acknowledges that mental fatigue has played a factor in both his and his team's inconsistent form.

"For me, football is played with the brain, and when the brain is mentally fatigued you're not going to see a player for who he is," he continued.

"I'm normally itching to get back, but when I came back, my body and my mental state were low.

"I've been playing since the age of five, pushing myself every day to be the best I can.

"When you add up all the games and all the traveling, it is a lot for the body.
