Legendary sports journalist Patrick Barclay dies aged 77 as tributes pour in for esteemed writer

Patrick Barclay worked for several publications over an incredible career that spanned several decades

Renowned football journalist Patrick Barclay has died at the age of 77, the Football Writers' Association announced today.

The Scottish writer established himself as one of Britain's most respected football journalists through his work at The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and Independent.


Barclay was also a familiar face on television as a regular contributor to Sky Sports' Sunday Supplement programme.

His family confirmed the news in a statement through the FWA, saying a celebration of his life would be held at a later date.

Barclay won the Sports Journalists' Association Sports Writer of the Year award during his distinguished career and served as chairman of the Football Writers' Association.

He authored several notable books, including biographies of Jose Mourinho ('Anatomy of a Winner') and Sir Alex Ferguson ('Football - Bloody Hell!').

His journey in journalism began at the Dundee Evening Telegraph, before going on to become chief football commentator at The Times and writing for other prestigious publications including The Sunday Telegraph and The Observer.

Former England striker Alan Shearer led the tributes, writing: "Ah no. Such sad news. RIP Paddy."

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler described him as "a great man" in his tribute.

Manchester United issued a statement saying: "Paddy will always be held in great esteem by everyone at Manchester United and we send our sympathies to his loved ones at this time."

Former Celtic forward Chris Sutton said: "Really sad news this. Rest in peace Patrick."

Fulham FC also expressed their condolences to Barclay's family and friends.

Fellow journalists paid tribute to Barclay's legacy, with The Athletic's Oliver Kay writing: "Such sad news. A wonderful football writer and always such engaging company."

The Mirror's Mike Walters hailed him as "one of the Fleet Street greats. Glorious writer, glorious company."

DMG Media's Lee Clayton described him as "charming, smart and welcoming to us all."

Tributes have poured in for Patrick Barclay

Chief sports correspondent Matt Lawton said: "Paddy was a charming man. The elegance in his writing for The Times and many other publications extended to everything he did."

Barclay was born in London on August 15, 1947, but moved to Scotland at the age of four.

He grew up in Dundee, where he attended the High School of Dundee before beginning his career in journalism at the local Evening Telegraph.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, with the Football Writers' Association confirming that a celebration of Barclay's life will be arranged for a future date.
