The Magpies mounted a brilliant comeback in Saturday's Premier League clash

When Jarrod Bowen scored to put West Ham 3-1 up against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, it looked as though the writing was on the wall for Eddie Howe.

With his side in freefall, and the injuries mounting, nobody was expecting Newcastle to force their way back into the contest.

Howe seemed dejected, with the Newcastle boss looking to the heavens as the doom and gloom mood around the club started to increase once more.

But the home side rose to the occasion, spurred on by a raucous St James' Park, to secure three crucial points in their battle to secure European football next term.

Newcastle got their day off a dream start, with Anthony Gordon fouled inside the box.

The England international was clearly feeling confident after shining for the Three Lions against Brazil last weekend.

And when Gordon went down, Alexander Isak then did the rest with the Sweden international scoring from the penalty spot.

West Ham, however, are made of tough stuff.

They have risen to shine for David Moyes at a time when many fans of the club have been calling for the Hammers to make a managerial change.

And Michail Antonio struck in the 21st minute to draw the visitors level.

Newcastle, for a while, seemed to be rocked.

And West Ham regained the lead just before half time, with Mohammed Kudus netting in controversial circumstances to fire Moyes' men ahead.

The former Ajax star scored from a quick free kick, with Newcastle feeling the goal shouldn't be allowed to stand.

Defender Fabian Schar was down with a head injury and Howe, as well as his coaching staff, felt the defender needed treatment.

Losing key players didn't help their cause either, with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Joe Willock forced off at the interval - with Tino Livramento and Miguel Almiron then following suit.

And when Bowen scored to put West Ham 3-1 up, the match seemed to be over.

However, Newcastle didn't read the script. And the brilliance of Isak, Gordon and Barnes helped them turn everything around in one of the most dramatic matches in recent history.

Isak scored his second penalty of the match, which came after Gordon was brought down once again - this time by Kalvin Phillips.

Barnes, who came off the bench, struck to draw the hosts level.

And the former Leicester star then scored a sensational winner, which came after more good work from Gordon, to spark wild celebrations around the ground.

It has been a difficult season for Newcastle at times, certainly less straightforward than their impressive campaign last year.

But this is a victory that Howe, and the club, needed to boost the mood around Tyneside.

Newcastle's victory has increased their chances of European football, with the club now just a point behind today's opponents with a game in hand.

They won't have too long to reflect on their stirring win, with Everton up next on Tuesday (7.30pm).
