The French striker has taken to social media to hit back

Neal Maupay has launched a shocking social media attack on Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, making a controversial reference to a 2021 incident involving the former midfielder and his daughter.

The Marseille striker took to X to respond after Scholes called him an "idiot" during The Overlap's Fan Debate.

"Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter's toes," wrote Maupay, followed by a foot emoji.

The extraordinary exchange was sparked by a debate about football celebrations and Maupay's copying of James Maddison's signature dart throw celebration.

The controversy began during The Overlap's Fan Debate, when Scholes was asked about the difference between young Arsenal player Myles Lewis-Skelly copying Erling Haaland's celebration and Maupay imitating Maddison's.

"He's an idiot, he just takes the p**s," was Scholes' blunt response about Maupay.

The discussion referenced Maupay's most recent use of Maddison's darts celebration while playing for Marseille last month.

The Frenchman had previously performed the same celebration during Brentford's 3-2 defeat by Tottenham in February 2024, mimicking the dart-throwing motion alongside Ivan Toney.

Maupay's social media jibe at Scholes referenced a controversial video from October 2021, which showed the former Manchester United star biting his daughter Alicia's toenails.

The clip, which lasted only a few seconds, captured Scholes giving his daughter a foot massage that included the unusual act.

Alicia Scholes, who was 20 at the time and a professional England netball player, shared the video with her thousands of Instagram followers.

She described the footage as showing "true love", though many social media users expressed disgust at the incident.

Maupay has established a reputation as a prolific social media troll, particularly targeting his parent club Everton.

After Everton's 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in December, he posted on X: "Whenever I'm having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile."
