Arsenal were reduced to 10 men in the first half against Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card.

Arsenal fans have vented their fury at Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card against Wolves, but Mike Dean 'understands' why Michael Oliver sent off the youngster.

The Gunners have dropped valuable points in recent weeks against Brighton and Aston Villa, resulting in them losing ground to league leaders Liverpool.

A trip to Wolves was a chance for Arsenal to get back on track and put pressure on Arne Slot's side.

However, they were dealt a blow before kick-off with Martin Odegaard being sent home due to an illness while Mikel Merino was also unable to travel.

Mikel Arteta opted to pick youngsters Ethan Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly in the starting line-up in a makeshift side.

They were unable to break the deadlock in the first half and their job was made even tougher when Lewis-Skelly was punished for a cynical foul just outside Wolves' box.

The hosts were about to go on a counter, albeit 90 yards from goal, when the full-back brought down Matt Doherty.

Lewis-Skelly walked away from the foul, clearly expecting nothing more than a yellow card.

However, referee Oliver pulled out a red card to the surprise of the Arsenal players with VAR sticking with the on-field decision.

Former Premier League official Dean was on Sky Sports News reviewing the incident and he explained why the red card was not overturned.

"I've got a still image," he said.

"If you see it, you can see why the referee has decided what he's done. He's put his studs down the inside of his leg.

"Now I've seen the other image, you can see why he's been sent off."

But Arsenal fans weren't convinced and they vented their fury on social media.

One supporter moaned: "That is an absolutely disgraceful red card decision."
