Millwall fans came under fire after chanting 'let him die' after Jean-Philippe Mateta was seriously injured during an FA Cup match against Crystal Palace

Millwall supporters have been heard singing offensive chants about Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta during their Championship match against Watford on Saturday.

The distasteful songs referenced the French striker's hospitalisation following a horror challenge from Lions goalkeeper Liam Roberts in their FA Cup clash last weekend.

Sky Sports' coverage of the match captured the chants from the away end at Vicarage Road.

Fans could be heard chanting "25 stitches, it should have been more" during the match.

Another chant, "Que sera sera whatever will be will be, Mateta's in A & E", was also audible in the background of the broadcast.

Roberts, 30, was dismissed in the FA Cup tie on March 1 after catching Mateta in the head with a high challenge.

The incident left the Palace forward requiring immediate medical attention, with Mateta being given an oxygen mask before leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

He was subsequently rushed to hospital following the collision at Selhurst Park.

The FA confirmed on Friday that Roberts would face an extended six-game ban for the tackle.

An independent Regulatory Commission upheld the FA's claim that the standard punishment was "clearly insufficient" for the offence.

"Following a hearing, the Regulatory Commission upheld The FA's claim, set aside the standard three-match punishment, and instead imposed a six-match ban," the FA statement read.

Roberts responded to the ban with a statement on Millwall's official website, revealing he had reached out to Mateta to apologise.

"As soon as I could, I reached out to Jean-Philippe personally to apologise, and I was thankful to hear back from him that evening that he was OK," Roberts wrote.

He denied any malicious intent, stating: "I have categorically never stepped onto a football pitch with the intention of hurting anyone."

This is not the first time Millwall fans have directed offensive chants at Mateta.

During the FA Cup match at Selhurst Park, supporters could be heard chanting "let him die" as the striker received treatment.

Despite the controversy, Millwall secured a 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road thanks to a towering header from striker Josh Coburn.
