The Manchester City legend has sparked a backlash following his comments on Wednesday night

Micah Richards has sparked controversy following a "no comment" remark made during CBS Champions League coverage on Tuesday night.

The former Manchester City defender, now a popular football pundit, made the suggestive comment after being shown footage of a female fan accidentally spilling her drink at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena.

The incident has divided viewers, with some accusing the 36-year-old of making a "crude" comment live on air.

Others have defended Richards, suggesting production staff should bear responsibility for showing the clip in the first place.

The incident occurred during CBS's coverage of Arsenal's 3-0 win over Real Madrid and Bayern Munich's 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan.

Presenter Kate Scott showed Richards and fellow pundit Jamie Carragher a clip of a supporter at the Allianz Arena accidentally spilling her drink in her face after getting overexcited.

Both pundits immediately laughed at the humorous video.

Richards then turned to Carragher and Scott with a suggestive expression and said: "No comment."

The remark caused Carragher to burst out laughing again before placing his head on the CBS desk.

Richards was seen sheepishly organising his notes after making the comment.

The reaction on social media was swift, with some viewers suggesting Richards could face consequences for his comment.

"Micah Richards is about to get sacked on-air there's no way he said what he just said," one CBS viewer posted on X.

Another added: "Might not escape this."

A third fan criticised the remark as inappropriate: "I think Micah Richards shouldn't have made that joke about the Bayern fan who spilt beer on her face... just needlessly crude and objectifying. 'No comment' is still a comment."

However, many fans leapt to Richards' defence, dismissing suggestions he could face serious consequences.

"He's not getting sacked for that," one supporter posted on X.

Another responded with a facepalm emoji: "You think he's getting sacked for saying 'no comment'?"

Some viewers directed blame at the production team rather than Richards himself.

"Don't think it's Micah Richards' fault actually. He's not in production, he shouldn't have been shown the clip in the first place," argued one social media user.

"Once he's shown it however he kind of has to react for the sake of the show. People behind the scenes should be held more accountable."

The CBS Champions League coverage team, including Scott, Richards, Carragher and Thierry Henry, are known for their light-hearted approach.

The pundits regularly share banter and make each other laugh during broadcasts.

This isn't the first time Richards has caused amusement with suggestive comments.

Earlier in the season, he sparked hilarity with innuendos about French club Stade Brestois during Champions League coverage.

After Henry mentioned Brest's upcoming fixture as "a big one," Richards commented: "It's a bit lopsided I think."

The remark sent production crew members into hysterics while Scott covered her face to conceal her laughter.
