The former Manchester United star has decided to switch allegiance from England

Mason Greenwood has formally applied to switch his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, the Football Association confirmed today.

The 23-year-old forward, who earned a single England cap in 2020, has submitted official paperwork to represent the Caribbean nation.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham revealed: "My understanding is he's asked to switch. That's happened formally, so he wouldn't be able to [play for England in future] because you can only switch once."

The decision ends speculation about Greenwood's international future with England.

Greenwood qualifies to represent Jamaica through his father, who was born on the Caribbean island.

His only England appearance came in September 2020 during a match in Iceland.

That debut was marred by controversy when he allegedly breached COVID-19 regulations by inviting two women into the England camp after the match.

Since then, Greenwood has not featured in England's plans, with former manager Gareth Southgate having previously indicated the forward wasn't in his thinking.

Bullingham clarified that there had been no formal communication ruling Greenwood out of England contention.

"We actually didn't have that communication," the FA chief said. "I know people asked Gareth about him and Gareth was up front in that he hadn't been in his thinking."

"I don't think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn't one we got to, so it's a personal decision by him."

The FA chief's comments suggest Greenwood made the choice independently rather than being formally excluded.

He initially joined Getafe on loan, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances for the Spanish side.

At Marseille, the forward has found exceptional form, netting an impressive 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches this season.

His performances in France have attracted attention from top clubs, with reports linking him to a potential summer move to Paris Saint-Germain. The striker's career had previously stalled following serious allegations in January 2022.

Greenwood is now set to represent Jamaica, who are coached by former England manager Steve McClaren.

The switch marks a significant turning point in the young forward's international career.

Jamaica will likely welcome Greenwood's goalscoring prowess as they look to strengthen their squad.

The Caribbean nation has been working to recruit eligible players with professional experience in Europe's top leagues.

Greenwood's decision finalises his international future, with FIFA rules preventing any further switches of allegiance once the process is completed.
