The January transfer window is heating up with clubs looking to make late deals ahead of next week's deadline.

Clubs all over Europe are frantically scouring the market for a bargain before the January transfer deadline with Manchester United, Chelsea and many others likely to be busy.

They appear to be utilising the loan market more than anything with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Fabio Carvalho, Timo Werner and Donny van de Beek all joining new clubs on a temporary basis.

Tottenham are currently the big spenders in the Premier League with Radu Dragusin joining from Genoa for £25million.

He's the only senior first-team player signed for a fee by a team in England's top division this month with just a week left in the transfer window.

It's a far cry from last year's January transfer window when Chelsea continued their record-shattering splurge by spending more than £300m on new signings.

Overall, Premier League clubs 12 months ago spent just over £800m in the January transfer window.

That figure will not be matched this time around unless something drastic happens in the final days of the window.

Instead, clubs appear more keen on clearing players from their squad for the second half of the season.

Brighton have been busy sending out some of their younger stars out on loan to gain first-team experience elsewhere.

Tottenham have been the busiest by far with Djed Spence, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Ivan Perisic, Sergio Reguilon and Ashley Phillips leaving on a temporary basis.

But talks appear to be ramping up on potential deals in the final few days of the transfer window with Manchester United's Mason Greenwood reportedly closing in on a sensational move to Barcelona.

According to The Sun, United want to offload the striker on a permanent basis and Barcelona are keen on making that happen.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan at the start of the season and has impressed with three goals and four assists in 16 appearances.

Chelsea may also be busy in the final few days as they've reportedly registered an interest in signing Karim Benzema on loan.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are lacking a natural goalscorer with Cole Palmer the only player to reach double digits for the season so far.

Benzema is supposedly unhappy with life in Saudi Arabia and would like a different challenge.

Newcastle star Kieran Trippier's future remains unclear too with interest from Bayern Munich and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

The Magpies rejected Bayern's opening offer of £12.8million and the Bundesliga club have reportedly refused to meet the asking price.

Newcastle must sell in order to buy to navigate Financial Fair Play rules with suggestions they could be in the market for a new central striker.
