The forward won't be playing at the European Championships this summer

Just 12 months ago, Marcus Rashford was a player bang in form.

Having propelled Manchester United to third in the Premier League table, and firing the Red Devils to Carabao Cup glory, the England international appeared to have turned a corner in his career.

Rashford was written off by many after toiling under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick in the 2021/2022 season, bagging just five goals across all competitions.

Yet the arrival of Erik ten Hag seemed to spark a new lease of life for the 26-year-old.

Rashford, last season, was unplayable.

He didn't just score 30 goals, he was at the very heart of what seemed to be a resurgent United emerging from the wilderness.

Fast-forward to now, however, and everything has changed.

Rashford has been left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 this summer, with the forward snubbed after a hugely underwhelming campaign.

The goals have dried up, with the forward netting just eight times from 42 matches across all competitions.

And the big smile he had on his face last season has been replaced by a stony and surly expression.

At the start of the season, United were truly awful.

While they beat Wolves and scraped a victory over Nottingham Forest, defeats to Tottenham and Arsenal would set the tone for what was to follow.

By the time the first international break came around in September, Rashford had scored just once from four matches.

A red card in a Champions League defeat away at Copenhagen proved to be catastrophic, with United failing to qualify for the knockout stages of European football's top-tier club competition.

When the New Year rolled around, Rashford seemed to be regaining some of his mojo.

He managed five goal involvements from Boxing Day onwards, netting three and assisting two. A corner, it appeared, had been turned.

At the end of January came controversy, however.

Rashford decided to jet off to Belfast before later saying he was too ill to train.

He was snapped in a nightclub while in Northern Ireland, with the United star then forced to accept responsibility for his actions.

Rashford, to his credit, offered to play for United in a 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport County.

But Ten Hag omitted him from his squad, with reports at the time saying the relationship between the pair was at breaking point.

Since then, they've attempted to move on.

Yet Rashford has continued to be inconsistent in front of goal, with his last strike coming in a 4-3 FA Cup win back in March.

There's still one game of the season to play, with the 26-year-old set to be involved in next weekend's FA Cup final.

But Rashford is now at a crossroads in his career and it will be fascinating to see what happens next.

England are among the favourites to win Euro 2024 and Southgate has decided to be ruthless.

Rashford, along with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, won't be jetting off to Germany with the rest of the Three Lions squad.

And his long-term future at United isn't assured, either.

If Ten Hag stays, it's certainly not unfeasible that Rashford will depart.

Paris Saint-Germain have long admired the forward and, with Kylian Mbappe primed to leave for Real Madrid, could launch a sensational swoop.

Clubs from Saudi Arabia could be tempted, too. His big name and big reputation, certainly, will appeal.

Rashford could, of course, bounce back. He has talent in abundance and could yet go on to become one of the best players in the world.

However, this feels like a significant moment. Being dropped by England will either make or break him, with no in-between.
