The England international is currently in the spotlight

Marcus Rashford's camp have insisted the Manchester United star is training hard, despite comments made by Ruben Amorim following the club's 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday.

Amorim sent shockwaves around the footballing world when he decided to publicly call out Rashford and accuse the 27-year-old of not working hard enough in training.

Having seen Lisandro Martinez propel his side to victory in west London, Amorim stated: "It is always the same reason [that he isn't playing].

"The reason is the training. The way I see what a footballer should do in training, in life, every day. If things don’t change, I will not change.

"You can see it today on the bench. We needed a little bit of pace to change the game to move some pieces, but I prefer it like that.

"I will put [Jorge] Vital on before I put a player that doesn’t give the maximum. I will not change in that department."

Rashford decided against responding to Amorim after the game.

He instead congratulated his team-mates on a victory that has seen them jump to eighth in the Premier League table.

But journalist Henry Winter, speaking on Sky Sports, has claimed that Rashford's camp have refuted the claims made by Amorim.

"He is training hard," he said when asked about the message from the player's entourage.

"But I think the understanding also, and the direction of travel for the last few months, is that Rashford, for tactical and final reasons, needs to move on.

"Tactically he doesn't fit into the tactical template of what Ruben Amorim has of the 3-4-2-1.

"You were talking about [Alejandro] Garnacho earlier, where does Rashford fit in that?

"He's not a natural No 10, he can play as the No 9 but really he doesn't hold the ball up the way Amorim wants.

"Also our old friends, PSR and financial reasons, Marcus Rashford is on a lot of money there, for Amorim to invest in the squad as he wants and the sort of players who fit in the 3-4-2-1 they need to move some players out."

Rashford has been linked with a move away from United as the close of the January transfer window creeps closer.

Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Napoli and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Besiktas have all emerged as potential suitors.

With the clock ticking, however, it's currently unclear what will happen next.

Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, has claimed Rashford should feel 'embarrassed' by Amorim's comments and believes there's 'no way back' for the 27-year-old.

"If I was that player that the manager said that about, my heart, my pride, my ego – embarrassment," said the six-time Premier League winner.

"For someone to question your application, to question [whether] you're going out there and giving 100 per cent for your team, [suggesting] that you're going to slack off and you're taking shortcuts…

"We all have days off or moments when we're not performing well, lacking confidence, but effort isn't really one of the things I would want to be hearing a manager say is lacking in my makeup.

"That's a damning comment, because I think he knows what the reaction is after that comment.

"He's not saying that without thinking, 'Where does this go after?' There's really no way back for Marcus after that, I don't think, with that type of comment."
