EXCLUSIVE: Teddy Sheringham has opened up on the new era at the club

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham says he's 'hearing' that Marc Guehi could be about to move to Old Trafford after Euro 2024.

The Crystal Palace defender has impressed for England at the European Championships so far, having started five of their six matches.

United are understood to be close to signing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, with the Netherlands international keen to reunite with Erik ten Hag.

But they also want another centre-back, too, having suffered numerous injuries in that position last season.

Sheringham, speaking exclusively to GB News via Gaming Gadgets, believes the Red Devils need 'strong' signings.

They're set to announce the arrival of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee imminently.

And Sheringham has also said he's 'hearing' Guehi could move to Old Trafford as well.

"Manchester United need strong players, winners, leaders and not bit part players," he said.

"I am hearing Guehi could join and I like this sound of this.

"It’s important to bring in players who will improve the performances on the pitch as last year wasn’t good enough, finishing 8th in the Premier League."

United were widely expected to sack Erik ten Hag earlier in the summer.

However, the Dutchman has remained in the dugout and signed a new contract after guiding the Red Devils to FA Cup glory.

United did sound out the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Marco Silva and Roberto Martinez about potentially taking over.

But they've stuck with Ten Hag, with INEOS confident the 54-year-old is the best man for the job.

Sheringham believes it's a decision that could have gone 'either way'.

"I think it could have gone either way, if the club would have sacked him you could have understood," he said.

"And you can also see why he was given the new contract as he won the FA Cup and he was quick to say after the final that if Manchester United don’t want him, that he will go and win trophies elsewhere.

"It was nice PR for him to say this, but it hasn’t been good enough with finishing 8th in the Premier League and getting knocked out of the Champions League very quickly."

With United fully behind Ten Hag, they've decided to bolster his backroom staff.

Former Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake has been drafted in.

And club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has been brought back in, with the Dutchman charged with the task of improving Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund bagged 16 goals from 43 appearances for United last season.

He has come under fire, however, especially amid comparisons with Erling Haaland.

But Sheringham thinks Van Nistelrooy will get the best from the Denmark international.

"I think the critics have been harsh on Hojlund," he added.

"I think he’s done really well. He’s got a lot of unfair criticism, he hasn’t got a lot of service at Manchester United at the moment and Ruud can help him with his experience, and understanding of what is needed in the Premier League.

"So I think it will be an invaluable experience for him [Van Nistelrooy] to be at the club."
