The Red Devils will be hoping to win the curtain-raiser at Wembley on Saturday

Manchester United have a 'positive vibe' in their camp ahead of Saturday's Community Shield showdown with Manchester City, according to manager Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils travel to Wembley on Saturday hoping to win the first trophy of the new season.

City qualified for the Community Shield by winning the Premier League, with Pep Guardiola's side pipping Arsenal to the prize.

As for United, they booked their place in the annual event by beating City to win the FA Cup back in May.

Many felt Ten Hag would lose his job at Old Trafford after a terrible season that saw United finish eighth in the Premier League table.

But the Dutchman ended up signing a new contract to extend his stay with the fallen giants instead.

In his programme notes for the clash at Wembley, Ten Hag says United have a 'positive vibe' around the place.

And he's also sent messages to summer signings Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, tipping them both to make a big impact in the coming years ahead.

"Sadly, we will have to wait a while for Leny Yoro to rejoin the squad after his unfortunate injury in the US, but he is a signing for the long-term and we remain excited about his potential in coming years," he said.

"We’re also delighted to welcome Joshua Zirkzee to the club and he is another talented young player who will keep getting better.

"There is also new energy in our staff and leadership group after the arrival of several new coaches, including Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as assistant managers, and Dan Ashworth as sporting director and Jason Wilcox as technical director.

"They have all contributed to what feels like a very positive vibe around the squad and staff heading into the new season.

"Every day at this club we have the opportunity to raise our levels and take a step forward, and today is no exception."

The Community Shield is, to all extent and purposes, a glamorous friendly.

But Ten Hag is hoping to win his third trophy with United in as many years, despite the lack of significance surrounding the fixture.

United beat Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup in February last year before being City in May.

Ten Hag said: "It is hard to believe that only eleven weeks have passed since we were last here for the Emirates FA Cup final, which was a fantastic afternoon for everyone associated with our club.

"As a result of that victory, we find ourselves here again today to face City once more, this time fighting for the Community Shield.

"We always aim to win every game we play and a chance to collect silverware of any kind is an opportunity to relish, so we are here today aiming to take the Shield back to Old Trafford.

"We know we can do it because, as we have shown before, this group is capable of beating any opponent when we play to our potential."

United and City last met in the Community Shield back in 2011.

The Red Devils found themselves trailing 2-0 after goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko.

But United produced a stirring comeback to win the trophy, with Nani bagging twice and Chris Smalling also on target.
