The England international saw his effort saved against the post by Ederson on Saturday

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has defended Jadon Sancho after his penalty miss in his side's Community Shield defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The match at Wembley went to penalties after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bernardo Silva, with nothing to separate the two sides.

United were ahead when Andre Onana brilliantly denied Silva from 12 yards.

But Sancho's miss let City back into the game, with Pep Guardiola's side then winning after Jonny Evans skied an effort over the bar.

Sancho has returned to action at United after repairing his relationship with Ten Hag, with the pair previously falling out last year.

And the Dutchman, speaking at his post-match press conference, has insisted the former Borussia Dortmund and City winger will continue to take penalties for the club going forward.

“He’s a very good penalty taker and I had — and have — no doubts to let him score a penalty," said the 54-year-old.

"Also in the future, he will take penalties.”

While United lost to City, there were certainly some encouraging signs on show.

The result could have been different had Marcus Rashford taken two glorious opportunities in the capital, with the England international showing signs of rustiness.

Ten Hag has backed the 26-year-old to come good and show his quality, however, despite an inconsistent performance.

"I think he was several times in very good positions," said the ex-Ajax boss.

"I'm very pleased he is getting in those positions.

"Keep going, keep making those movements and the team will make those movements, he will score goals.

"He's experienced enough to deal with this and once he scores one, then the goals will come."

Ten Hag also admits United were disappointed by the result, though was keen to focus on the positives rather than the negatives.

“We are disappointed. We have to feel the pain and everyone does," he admitted.

"But also I see some positives. We performed well and could have won this game.

“We were twice leading in the game. Then on penalties we lost. It is just disappointing that we couldn’t bring it over the line.”

United won't have too long to reflect on the defeat.

They will begin their Premier League campaign against Fulham on Friday night (8pm).

United lost 2-1 to Fulham in the same fixture at Old Trafford last season, with goals from Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi giving the Cottagers all three points.
