Manchester United's cost-cutting plans have taken a hit with their decision to sack Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United will reportedly have to fork out £17.5million to Erik ten Hag after sacking the Dutchman.

United's dramatic 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday appears to have been the final straw for the club's board as the decision was made to part ways with Ten Hag.

The defeat left them 14th in the Premier League table with just three wins from nine matches.

They've also stuttered in Europe with three draws from matches against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce.

United announced in a statement on their club website that Ruud van Nistelrooy will replace Ten Hag on an interim basis.

But sacking Ten Hag won't come cheap for United as it's been reported the Dutchman will receive £17.5m in compensation.

It was only a few months ago when Ten Hag was given a one-year contract extension after winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

His new deal was set to expire in 2026, but he'll now be paid the remainder of his contract following his dismissal.

Thomas Tuchel was originally approached by United in the summer after his departure from Bayern Munich.

But the German coach rejected United's offer and has since agreed to become the next England manager.

Tuchel being off the market means United are even shorter on options to replace Ten Hag.

Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate and Xavi Hernandez are the most popular names being linked with the Old Trafford job who are currently out of work.

However, Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is also being touted as one of the favourites.

Amorim was strongly linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool before the Reds settled on Arne Slot.

But United would have to fork out more money to snap up Amorim as it was previously reported he has an £8.6m release clause in his contract with Sporting.

Amorim has also been linked with Manchester City and replacing Pep Guardiola.

But Sporting president Frederico Varandas feels the speculation over Amorim's future is only a good thing for the club.

"When am I going to lose Ruben Amorim?" he said.

"I've been hearing this question for over four years, which for me, and I think this should make all Sporting fans and even the entire media proud.

"It's questioning how one of the best coaches in the world has been at Sporting for five years, that's what's fantastic."
