Amorim made his name as a manager playing a successful 3-4-3 formation at Sporting Lisbon.
But individuals at his current club have struggled to adapt to his methods, with confidence 'starting to ebb away' as a result.
United had, prior to the defeat to Tottenham, won six of their last eight matches across all competitions.
Yet players think that, even when they win, it's down to moments of individual brilliance - instead of anything Amorim has been working on behind the scenes.
A source is quoted as saying: "The feeling is, 'We got away with one but we might not be so lucky next time.'"
Amorim is, however, eager to stick to his guns.
United have endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, having picked up just 29 points from 25 matches.
The board are fully behind Amorim, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe confident he can bring back the glory days if given time and investment.

But United must start improving, and fast, to show they're capable of improving under the Portuguese's watch in the coming months and years ahead.
Amorim, speaking on Sunday, admitted that United had to finish the season and 'start over' once it ends.
Reacting to the defeat to Tottenham, the former Sporting boss said: "It was the difference of the game, they scored and we didn't.
"We had the opportunities. We had situations in transitions, trying to get a result, but in the end they scored and we didn't.

"We want to recover the players. I think we can recover some players for the next game. We have to be together to finish the season and start over."
Amorim named eight academy players on his bench for the match.
However, he only introduced one - Chido Obi-Martin - with the rest forced to watch from the sidelines.
On why he didn't bring on more young players, the United boss added: "It is the hardest competition in the world. I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I didn't want to change. But they will play.

"You try to read the game, understand what you see in training. The team were pushing for the goal and I didn't feel the need to change.
"I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst.
"The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident in my work and I just want to win games.
"The place in the table is my worry. I am not worried about me."
