The Red Devils won 5-4 at Old Trafford to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has insisted Harry Maguire won't be used as a striker permanently - despite his heroics for the club against Lyon last night.

After going 2-0 up following efforts from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, the Red Devils found themselves 4-2 down at Old Trafford as the Ligue 1 side came roaring back.

United, however, refused to throw in the towel and accept defeat.

In a stunning six-minute spell in extra-time, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Maguire all netted to spark wild celebrations around the ground.

United are now through to the semi-finals of the competition, despite a campaign that has lurched from one crisis to another.

Amorim, after the game, was asked if Maguire would be used as a striker more often.

The former Leicester star has proven useful in that position at times and, with Rasmus Hojlund toiling, some feel he should be deployed up top more often.

Amorim, however, has insisted that won't be happening - insisting he only used Maguire as a No 9 last night due to what was at stake.

"To play a normal game, no. In these moments, it is something that is really important," said the 39-year-old.

"When I see Harry Maguire and I put him as a striker, I just see one guy that inside the box. Is he not good inside the box?

"In the opposite box he is striker, he is not a defender, he knows how to behave in that space and it is just to put those different characteristics in a different moment."

At half-time in extra-time, United seemed to be dead and buried.

Amorim, when asked what he told his players, added: "At half-time in extra-time we had to change the positions, to try to be really clear about the position of Harry Maguire.

"Try to put Casemiro near the goal, Kobbie Mainoo near the goal, Mason Mount to cross balls and try to explain that we need to score one goal and anything can change, so it is pushing on with the team.

"Of course, it is a difficult moment and then we have to be really lucky to change the game and this was the case today."

United will now face Athletic Bilbao in the last four.

The Spanish side eliminated Rangers with a 2-0 victory on Thursday, with Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams on target.

Amorim knows Bilbao will represent a tough test but is determined to guide United to a trophy as they look to end a miserable season on a high.

"I played against them in pre-season with Sporting. I know a little bit," he said.

"Of course, it is a different moment and we know they are really technical. They have two wingers who are really good.

"We will have time to assess all the characteristics of the opponent and we need to focus a lot on what we need to do until that game because we need to.

"Especially if you look at the team in the moments at the end of the second half, the team was really tired and you can feel it with some players.

"Bruno Fernandes today was a little bit tired, so I need to be careful, even with Bruno. In the game and also in-between the next two games in the Europa League, I will try to do that, but I will not promise."
