The 2023 champions were too strong for their rivals on Tuesday night

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has surpassed another Sir Alex Ferguson record in the wake of the club's impressive 4-0 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday night.

The Spaniard is hoping to steer his side to a second European crown, having landed the first in 2023.

City went into the game seeking a return to winning ways after being held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle on Saturday.

And they cruised to victory in Slovakia last night, with Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and James McAtee all on target.

Guardiola has shattered many of Ferguson's records during his time at the Etihad.

Ferguson, for all his greatness, never guided Manchester United to four league titles on the trot.

The Scot's treble-winning team in 1999 picked up an impressive 91 points - but Guardiola has outdone that on three occasions, too.

And, per the BBC, another record has now tumbled.

Guardiola's City have now won 13 Champions League games by four or more goals - which is one more than Ferguson's from his time at United.

Yet that is unlikely to satisfy the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss as he looks to win another Champions League crown.

Guardiola has actually won the competition on more occasions than Ferguson, too.

Ferguson achieved the feat in 1999, with United then winning the Champions League in 2008 following a dramatic penalty shootout win over Chelsea.

As for Guardiola, he landed his first Champions League trophy as a manager during his time at Barcelona.

They beat United 2-0 in the 2009 final following goals in either half from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi.

Two years later, Guardiola got the better of Ferguson again.

Barcelona beat the Red Devils 3-1 at Wembley, with Pedro, Messi and David Villa all finding the net - while Wayne Rooney scored a consolation.

Meanwhile, speaking after City's win on Tuesday, the 53-year-old lavished praise on Gundogan.

The Germany international skipped the side and scored his first goal since returning to the club from Barcelona back in the summer.

Guardiola said: “Yeah today he played at the level that we know he can do it, he has a strong mentality, the game against Newcastle was not really, really good, one of the worst I’ve ever seen from him in the past eight or nine years, but it happens.
