Manchester City have got off to a terrible start against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola could not believe his eyes after a shocking start for Manchester City against Arsenal that saw them go a goal down.

A glaring error from City's defence - chiefly John Stones and Manual Akanji - allowed Arsenal to take an early lead.

A bizarre pass from Stones to his centre-back partner was poorly controlled and quickly nipped off his feet by Arsenal's press, finding Kai Havertz one-on-one with Stefan Ortega.

The German unselfishly set up his captain Martin Odegaard, who tucked the ball into the empty net that saw the Emirates roar in the second minute.

But City failed to learn their lessons as minutes later, Arsenal had the ball in the net again.

More disastrous defending saw Odegaard pop the ball up for Gabriel Martinelli, who chipped the ball delightfully over Ortega.

However, City's blushes were spared when the linesman called for offside with TV replays showing that the Brazilian was clearly off.

The cameras then panned to Guardiola on the touchline, who looked completely shellshocked by what he was watching.

City were counting their blessings once again as more kamikaze defending allowed Arsenal another chance to double their lead.

A shoddy pass from Ortega was intercepted and given to Havertz, who had the goal at his mercy.

But the forward somehow blazed his effort wide as Guardiola fell to the floor with his head in his hands.

It comes after a decent week for the Premier League champions, having beaten Chelsea 3-1 at the Etihad last Saturday.

That was followed up with a 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League to see them avoid a humiliating exit from the competition at the first phase - albeit needing a comeback after going a goal down.

Nevertheless, City's win over Chelsea saw them re-enter the Premier League top-four - with their title ambitions surely over.

But Arsenal are desperately trying to chase down Liverpool - who started Sunday nine points clear of the Gunners.

City have looked to spend their way out of trouble after a run of form that saw them win once in 12 matches.
