Plymouth Argyle pulled off one of the biggest shocks in recent FA Cup history

Plymouth Argyle pulled off a stunning FA Cup upset by defeating Premier League leaders Liverpool 1-0 at Home Park, ending the Reds' hopes of a quadruple.

The Championship's bottom side secured their first victory over Liverpool since 1956, outfighting opponents positioned 44 places above them in the football pyramid.

The shock result saw Arne Slot's much-changed Liverpool side exit the competition at the fourth round stage, with the hosts producing a memorable defensive display.

The decisive moment came in the 53rd minute when Harvey Elliott was penalised for handball inside the Liverpool box.

Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie stepped up to take the spot kick, slamming home what would prove to be the winning goal.

The penalty jolted Liverpool into action, with manager Slot immediately responding by introducing Darwin Nunez from the bench.

Despite increasing the attacking tempo, the Reds struggled to create clear opportunities against Plymouth's resolute defence.

Liverpool were looking to hammer down the door at Home Park but found chances hard to come by.

But when they did manage to breach a resolute defence - which included man of the match Nikola Katic - Conor Hazard was equal to everything thrown his way.

That included a fantastic save against Diogo Jota's volley, which looked destined for the top corner.

However, the Northern Irishman came flying across to push the Portugal international's effort away before saving Darwin Nunez's header late into stoppage time.

The day started off badly for Slot, with Joe Gomez being forced off through injury and replaced by academy starlet Isaac Mabuya.

The 20-year-old came straight off when Hardie scored a penalty for Nunez as Slot threw on his big guns.

But it made little difference as Plymouth pulled off one of the biggest shocks in recent FA Cup history.

For new manager Miron Muslic, who replaced Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United legend was sacked earlier this season, it is the result of a lifetime.

The Austrian-Bosnian coach has called former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp one of his biggest inspirations.

And when current Liverpool coach Arne Slot was in charge of Feyenoord, Muslic travelled to the Netherlands to watch them in action as he learned his trade.
